Doughnuts With Dad Makes a Great Friday Morning

Over 100 dads and 200 kids devoured 300 doughnuts this morning at our second annual Doughnuts With Dad put on by our HERD Fathers' Group.  Thanks to our awesome dads for this fabulous morning.

Drug Awareness Assembly for 5th Grade

Our 5th graders listened to Officer Adam Argullin speak and perform on the drums today in a drug awareness presentation.  The kids said it was "Awesome...SO good."

212 Reading In Action

One of the standards groups for the past 9 weeks in 4th grade was "Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of a text, referring explicitly to the text as the basis for the answers."  At the start of the 9 weeks, the teacher reported that students asked questions such as:

• Who are the characters?
• What is the setting?
• Where did the dog go?

After 9 weeks of instruction on how to look at text, how to determine the questions they have as they are reading, and how to write their own questions to be answered while reading to allow them to better comprehend the story, these are some of the many questions this group formulated during yesterday's 212 class.  The teacher is OVERJOYED with their progress and it showed in this round of Star scores.  Our scores are growing!!

GO Pantry and Longbranch

Thank you to the kind men and women at GO Pantry for providing weekend food bags for some of our kids.  Longbranch will be taking donations November 24 and 25 to restock the pantry shelves.  See maroon folders for specific donation items to be collected.

3rd grade to COSI for STEM Extension

Our 3rd graders are off to COSI (Center of Science and Industry) in Columbus, OH to learn more about science/technology/engineering and mathematics.  If you've never been to COSI, it's a blast.  They welcome families to explore their exhibits and Columbus is such a fun city to visit.  We're excited to make this an annual trip for our 3rd graders.  For more information about COSI, visit this link:  http://www.cosi.org/

Fourth Grade Factoring

In our math 212 classes, we've been working on the practice of Number Talks.  Through Number Talks, kids develop their mental math proficiency and they build their deep thinking skills.  Walking into a classroom engaged in Number Talks is like walking into pure math energy.  It's just the neatest thing to watch.  Here's some evidence of 4th grade factoring during Number Talks this week.  Kids love finding factors of numbers.  May sound crazy to your adult brain...but seriously...kids will factor numbers on markerboards for their entire recess if you let them.  Why not?
